The long-awaited services for Holy Communion and Morning and Evening Prayer are now available online. I encourage you have a look. I think they have done a fine job at preserving in more modern English much of the dignity and reverence of the older services, while maintaining Biblical and theological integrity. Still, in my opinion, there is no improving on the flowing cadences and graphic imagery of the older language. It does me more good to “bewail my manifold sins and wickedness” than to “repent of my many sins and offenses.” Repenting is fine but bewailing invites us to go deeper. I would imagine that these new services will be very well received. In spite of being a little emotionally bland and civilized, and lacking poetic punch they are clear and theologically sound.
