Matthew 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Just as with food, I thank you for this book
That nourishes my soul. Your voice alive,
Inside its words first spoken when you shook
Mount Horeb by your presence. I survive
The screen-lit wastes of endless talking points
By list’ning for your truth upon each page.
You breathe fresh intimation that anoints
My artless tongue to sing upon the stage
Of new creation. How will others hear?
An antiphon ascends and spreads above
The arid wastes; the song that casts out fear
By dropping manna of perfected love
On rescued slaves. I gather what I need
And listen for your footfalls as you lead.
